Best Snorkeling in Aruba From Shore (No Tour Needed)

Do you need a snorkeling tour in Aruba? No. Most of Aruba's best snorkeling starts at the beach, in shallow water, and costs nothing. Tres Trapi, Boca Catalina, Malmok Beach, Mangel Halto and Baby Beach are all reachable by car and entered from shore. Green sea turtles feed on seagrass a few minutes' swim from the shore at Tres Trapi, so you do not need a boat to see them. A snorkel tour costs $55 to $135 per person across the 12 snorkel trips we track. Bring a mask and snorkel, park, and get in the water. Book a tour only in the one case below.

When is a snorkeling tour in Aruba worth it?

A tour earns its price in one situation, at Mangel Halto.

You want to cover the whole Mangel Halto reef. Some operators rent underwater scooters, handheld motors that pull you through the water so you can cover long distances without tiring. Mangel Halto is the only shore spot in Aruba where you swim far enough for a scooter to make a difference. At Tres Trapi, Boca Catalina and Malmok Beach the turtles and fish are close enough that a scooter adds nothing.

Everywhere else, a snorkel tour drives you to a beach you could have reached yourself in a few minutes, where other people are snorkeling the same water for free. If you are weighing the boat trips instead, our free vs paid snorkeling guide compares them.

Where can you snorkel with turtles in Aruba from shore?

Tres Trapi is the best place in Aruba to see green sea turtles from shore. Boca Catalina and Malmok Beach, the coves next to it, are the next best.

Turtle sightings around the ABC islands were rare 15 to 20 years ago, local snorkelers tell us. Today, at Tres Trapi, they are hard to miss.

Go early in the morning. Local snorkelers say turtles are most active early in the day, when they are feeding. The operators' own schedules point the same way: the best-rated private turtle tour's first departure is 06:30, and the seven morning catamarans that snorkel Boca Catalina, Tres Trapi and Malmok leave Palm Beach between 09:00 and 09:30. Get in before they arrive and the water is yours.

Stay close to shore. You do not need to swim out to find turtles. They eat seagrass, and seagrass grows close to shore in shallow water. Swim along the coast for a few minutes and you will find them.

Do not touch or chase the turtles. It does not work anyway: a turtle that is followed swims away. Float still and let it feed, and you will watch it for longer.

Expect company. On a busy morning the first sign of a turtle is often a child shouting that they found one.

Is Mangel Halto good for snorkeling?

Yes, on calm days. Mangel Halto is Aruba's best shore reef snorkel, and it takes more swimming than the turtle coves. You swim out from the mangroves to the reef, then follow the reef.

Stay on the lagoon side. Between the mangroves and the reef the water stays shallow. That is where an unguided snorkeler belongs.

Do not swim out through the cuts in the reef. Where the bay opens to the sea there are two cuts in the reef, one marked by a white buoy. Water flows fast through them, and the current gets stronger the closer you get. Small boats also use the buoyed cut.

Go only when the water is calm. When the water at Mangel Halto is choppy, it is not a spot for beginner swimmers. Experienced swimmers get a better snorkel on a calm day too: clearer water and less effort.

The small-group snorkel at Mangel Halto stays on the lagoon side and its wreck, without scooters, so it is not the case above.

Is Baby Beach safe for snorkeling?

Inside the cove, yes. Baby Beach is a good snorkel inside the cove. The danger is at the open end of the bay, where the reef is: the water gets much deeper there and the current much stronger.

Do not leave the cove. Beyond the protected area the current is strong enough to sweep a swimmer away (espn.com), and once it has you, swimming back into the cove against it is nearly impossible. People have drowned at Baby Beach, among them a 42-year-old tourist in February 2024 (aruba.nu). The tourism board asks snorkelers to stay within the marked snorkel area (aruba.com).

If the water outside the cove is choppy at all, do not swim out. Stay inside the cove.

If a current catches you, do not swim against it. A rip current is stronger than any swimmer. Fighting it exhausts you, and exhaustion is how people drown. Let it carry you out, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current, then swim back in at a different point.
